Robert Russell Bennett. Civic Orchestra of Jacksonville. The network reached out to Richard Rodgers, who had gained fame as a composer behind the hit Broadway musical The King and I. He composed some dozen short themes, which he then handed over to his longtime collaborator, Robert Russell Bennett, for development and orchestration. In the end, Bennett contributed much more original writing to the project than did Rodgers. The TV series, which aired in 1952 and 1953, was a huge hot-as was its musical score.

Robert Russell Bennett (June 15, 1894 – August 18, 1981) was an American composer and arranger, best known for his orchestration of many well-known Broadway and Hollywood musicals by other composers such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, and Richard Rodgers. In 1957 and 2008, Bennett received Tony Awards recognizing his orchestrations for Broadway shows. Early in his career, he was often billed as Russell Bennett.
