Procol Harum Live: In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, by the English band Procol Harum together with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, was released in 1972; it was recorded at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 18 November 1971. The album was very successful on the Billboard Top 200, peaking at No. 5. It is the band's best-selling album, certified Gold by the RIAA.
This whole album was an afterthought - Procol Harum had been invited to play a concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Da Camera Singers in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in August of 1971, at the tail-end of their last tour with Robin Trower in the lineup.
Featuring – The Da Camera Singers, The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Guitar – Dave Ball (2). Lyrics By – Keith Reid. Also inculdes a replica 1972 concert poster. Some copies were signed by Gary Brooker.
Procol Harum founder, Gary Brooker wrote the parts for the Edmonton Symphony and Da Camera Singers for these compositions that are among the band's most notable pieces, emanating from previous studio albums such as A Salty Dog (Regal Zonophone, 1969), the band's debut, Procol Harum (Regal Zonophone, 1967) and others. In addition, this version of "Conquistador" was a released as a single and was a commercial smash, subsequent to their timeless 1967 classic, "A Whiter Shade of Pale
On the 18th of November 1971, Procol Harum recorded this concert with a 52 piece symphony orchestra and 24 singers in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This is the evidence of this grand event. This album melds rock band and orchestra better than any I've heard, including PH's Grand Hotel. Not only did they take an old album track and turn it into a top 10 hit in "Conquistador", but the band took two epic-length pretensions from previous studio efforts, "In Held Twas In I" and "Whaling Stories", and made them seem as if rock was MEANT to be played with a full orchestra and chorus. Both are wonderfully arranged and stirringly played.
