Mono - One Step More And You Die album flac

Since its original release in 2002, One Step More and You Die has become the monolithic cornerstone of MONO's discography. Every subsequent release has been inevitably (and perhaps unfairly) compared to this album, as if it were the band's high watermark, never to be dethroned. MONO brilliantly answered even the most stubborn of naysayers with 2006's transcendent You Are There. To celebrate that release, we dug into their back catalog and pulled out this masterpiece of dark dirge, repackaged with additional artwork

Mono formed in 2000, so the timing in terms of post-rock influence seems about right. One Step More and You Die is their second album, after debuting in 2001 with Under the Pipal Tree on Tzadik. Yeah, it's derivative, and yeah, we've heard it before, but at least Mono apes the best from the era, capturing the crucial drama. Mogwai, for example, completely lost me with Come On Die Young, one of the dullest albums I've ever owned. Only the longer tracks use extreme dynamics, though. Mopish Morning, Halation Whisper" sounds like an interlude off the first Godspeed album, with violin and piano wobbling at variable speed mixed with a bit of vinyl crackle.

More structured and with a greater feel for dynamics than many Japanese noise rock releases, Mono's One Step More and You Die shows that noise rock shouldn't be afraid to explore quieter sonic spaces - in fact, the opening track, "Where Am I," is downright pretty. Of course, that doesn't last long. The album never quite gets to that level of ecstatic release again, but shorter tracks like "Mopish Morning, Halation Wiper" (which makes excellent use of an out of tune piano and guest cellist Udai Shika) and the slowly unfolding "A Speeding Car" smartly build an almost subliminal tension before quietly resolving. Akin to Mogwai, Larval, or Sonic Youth's more delicate moments, One Step More and You Die is a phenomenal instrumental rock album.
