Toxicity is the second studio album by Armenian-American heavy metal band System of a Down, released on September 4, 2001 by American Recordings and Columbia Records. Featuring the heaviness and aggression of their 1998 eponymous debut, it features more melody, harmonies, and singing than the band's aforementioned album.

System of a Down released their debut self-titled album toward the end of Rage Against the Machine’s tenure as rock radio’s crowning political agitators. Like RATM, SOAD interpolated West Coast hip-hop’s quick vocal clip into a guitar-driven metal milieu. But SOAD’s compositions disoriented as much as they elucidated. Their second album, Toxicity, succeeded, improbably, in a radio environment that favored simplistic formulas. Max Martin had stamped popular music with his surefire songwriting brand, ushering in a cross-genre rush of structurally identical singles from the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and Britney Spears. System of a Down competed with the bros of Nickelback, Creed, and Staind on the alternative charts, bands that dressed up the Martin school of pop with power chords and ham-throated vocals.
Released September 4, 2001. 1. Prison Song Lyrics. The second album released by heavy metal band System of a Down, Toxicity is arguably the band’s most popular album; it sold approximately 2,700,000 copies in the US alone, and contains three of the band’s biggest hits; Chop Suey!, Toxicity, and Aerials. The song Chop Suey! was put on the 2001 Clear Channel memorandum, a list of lyrically questionable songs released after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

System of a Down obliterated the boundaries of modern metal with their self-titled 1998 debut, a musical Jenga tower constructed from brutal distortion, Middle Eastern melodies, proggy rhythmic shifts, kooky surrealism, raw-nerve political angst and demented circus-master shrieks. It still seems inconceivable, but the public responded to the madness, and the album went gold. System continued to evolve across their next three LPs, but Toxicity – which Rolling Stone ranked the 57th Best Album of the 2000s – remains their masterstroke. They clearly didn’t fit, but they were so good that they transcended not fitting, Rubin told the BBC in 2014, summarizing the band’s – and album’s – importance. Those are the artists that I like the best.
