Milestones (CL 1193) is a studio album by American jazz trumpeter and composer Miles Davis, recorded with his "first great quintet" augmented as a sextet. It was released in 1958 by Columbia Records. Tenor saxophonist John Coltrane's return to Davis' group in 1958 coincided with the "modal phase" albums: Milestones and Kind of Blue (1959) are both considered essential examples of 1950s modern jazz. Davis at this point was experimenting with modes – scale patterns other than major and minor.
Milestones of a Jazz Legend - Miles.
Miles, back from Paris where he had recorded the music for Louis Malle’s film Lift To The Scaffold, added Cannonball Adderley’s alto to his quintet. Trane’s cubist abstractions and Cannonball’s bluesy lyricism offered him the contrasts that he was looking for, while his rhythm section provided the intensity of a Formula 1 racing car and the comfort of a limousine for every tempo. Original issue: Columbia LP CL 1193 on September 2, 1958 Producer: George Avakian Engineer: Harold Chapman February 4, 1958 (a) Miles Davis (tpt); Cannonball Adderley (as); John Coltrane (ts); Red Garland (p); Paul Chambers (b); Philly Joe Jones (d) On track 5 only the rhythm section plays. March 4, 1958 (b) Miles Davis (tpt, p); Cannonball Adderley (as); John Coltrane (ts); Red Garland (p); Paul Chambers (b); Philly Joe Jones (d) All tracks recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, NYC. Dr. Jackle.
Milestones was Miles Davis' third Columbia release after 'Round About Midnight (1957) and Miles Ahead (1957). The recording was made during one of Davis' most creatively intense periods, preceding his recording of the soundtrack for Ascenseur Pour L'echafaud (Fontana, 1958) in late 1957 and the subsequent recordings of Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else (Blue Note, 1958) and the repertoire that would become Kind of Blue (Columbia, 1959). Milestones is significant as a creative hinge period between Davis' bebop/hard bop period and his future modal period
Tracks and are respectively and definitely "Dr. Jekyll" and "Miles", not "Dr. Jackle" and "Milestones". However, it's unclear to me whether I may fix these mistakes, as the history shows they have already been corrected then reintroduced several times. I own both Columbia mono and stereo releases. The track (alternate take) is also titled "Milestones". Cedesguin (talk) 10:55, 16 December 2013 (UTC). php?title Talk:Milestones (Miles Davis album)&oldid 586319149". Miles Davis – trumpet Julian Cannonball Adderley – alto saxophone John Coltrane – tenor saxophone William Red Garland – piano Paul Chambers – bass Philly Joe Jones – drums. Not nearly as famous as Kind of Blue, but featuring the same horn section as the tour de force album recorded in February and March of 1959, Milestones is an excellent precursor to Kind of Blue. Certainly the latter album is universally known as one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, jazz album ever recorded, but listening to Milestones shows the transition period that Miles and his group were in.
