The Four Seasons is the best known of Vivaldi's works. Unusual for the time, Vivaldi published the concerti with accompanying poems (possibly written by Vivaldi himself) that elucidated what it was about those seasons that his music was intended to evoke. It provides one of the earliest and most-detailed examples of what was later called program music-music with a narrative element. Four Seasons ~ Vivaldi. The Four Seasons (Italian: Le quattro stagioni) is a set of four violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi. Composed in 1723, The Four Seasons is Vivaldi's best-known work, and is among the most popular pieces of Baroque music. The texture of each concerto is varied, each resembling its respective season. For example, "Winter" is peppered with silvery pizzicato notes from the high strings, calling to mind icy rain, whereas "Summer" evokes a thunderstorm in its final movement, which is why the movement is often dubbed "Storm

Originally written and performed by Vivaldi and the chamber orchestra he formed at a girls orphanage in Venice, these concerti were largely forgotten after the composer s death until their rediscovery in the 1920s and subsequent recording in the 50s. A set of sonnets, likely penned by Vivaldi himself, accompany the score and describe the natural settings that inspired the music. Anne Akiko Meyers does it once again; she takes well know works and breathes new life into them. One such work is Antonio Vivaldi's Le Quattro Stagioni (The Four Seasons). This is not only part of the main repertoire of many chamber orchestras but parts of it have been heard in movies, soundtracks and outdoor cafés.

When it comes to Baroque music, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is second only in popularity to Pachelbel’s Canon in D in the Classic FM Hall of Fame. Familiarity makes us take for granted this groundbreaking work, beloved of film-makers and TV adverts. On the surface, it is a collection of violin concertos; in reality, it is music’s first tone poem – that is, music with a narrative or illustrative basis. Of the nearly 400 concertos that Vivaldi composed, over 230 are for his own instrument, the violin. He was the prototype of the modern virtuoso, bewitching his audience with his technical prowess.

Antonio Vivaldi appears to have started this trend of adapting music from The Four Seasons, and since then it has expanded into many aspects of the performing arts (as have other instrumental & vocal works by the composer). Aura (Japan) recorded an a cappella arrangement of Vivaldi’s four seasons, and had also performed Vivaldi’s Spring chorus (from Dorilla in Tempe) on a prior album. Sinfonity (Spain) performed Vivaldi’s four seasons for electric guitar orchestra. Bachod Chirmof (America) produced a MIDI recording & animation of Vivaldi’s winter (movements I & III).
