Background information. It was during the period of recording the album Meltdown with Ash that Hatherley began to record her own album Grey Will Fade simultaneously, fully encouraged by the rest of the band. From the album she released the singles "Bastardo", "Kim Wilde" and "Summer", which all, as well as the album itself, received high praise from critics. Charlotte Hatherley has spoken for the first time about her departure from Ash. As previously reported the former guitarist left the band at the start of 2006. In a statement it was announced that it was a mutual decision. However, Hatherley said that it was more complex than that. She said: In the end it was the boys’ choice. They wanted to go back to being a three-piece. Hatherley says she was unhappy with the direction that band were taking with their 2004 album ’Meltdown’. She told The Independent: The boys were really in love with American music and with America. After years of touring the States they were listening to a lot of Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana, stuff I’ve never really been into.

Charlotte Franklin Hatherley (born 20 June 1979) is an English singer, songwriter and guitarist. She initially came to prominence as guitarist and backing vocalist for alternative rock band Ash. Since leaving Ash in 2006, she has pursued a solo career and also acted as a touring instrumentalist for Bryan Ferry, KT Tunstall, Bat for Lashes and Birdy. Hatherley has also been a touring member of NZCA Lines and is currently musical director for South African artist Nakhane. While recording the album Meltdown with Ash, Hatherley began to record her own album Grey Will Fade. From the album she released the singles "Bastardo", "Summer" (both videos directed by Edgar Wright), and "Kim Wilde", which all received high praise from critics.
