Psalms for the Dead is the eleventh studio album by the Swedish doom metal band Candlemass, released on 8 June 2012. At the time of its release, the band stated that this would be their final album, though bassist and founding member Leif Edling has since retracted this claim. Psalms for the Dead is, however, the last Candlemass album recorded with singer Robert Lowe, who left the band just six days before its release.

As lead and rhythm guitar players respectively, they weave in and out of each other throughout Mats Leven’s captivating lyrical spell song, evoking crushing fantasies and fears. Death Thy Lover, Candlemass’s new EP, purports to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the band’s debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (along with the book and everything else). That said, it feels a bit like a stopgap-just three songs of Sabbath-y licks and theatrical vocals portending doom, plus one solidly crushing instrumental. Even with 3/5 of the lineup altered from the band’s debut (with journeyman Mats Levén now permanently on lead vocals), this is something that would have sounded right at home in 1986.
