Gonzalo Rubalcaba: Avatar by Jay Deshpande, published on March 8, 2008. Although his sound is as blazing and inspiring as ever, Gonzalo Rubalcaba's new album may mark something of a departure. Recorded at the famed New York studio of the same name, Avatar provides listeners with a unique melting pot of songs and styles, while also implying new freedom and possibility for the renowned Cuban pianist. Only one of the seven tunes on this album is a Rubalcaba original, but the majority are written by his bandmates.

Supernova is a studio album by The Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio released by Blue Note Records on July 17, 2001. The trio consisted of Gonzalo Rubalcaba on piano, bassist Carlos Henriguez, and drummer Ignacio Berroa. It peaked at number 25 in the Billboard Top Jazz Albums chart. Produced by Rubalcaba, the album was released following his collaborative work with Charlie Haden on the album Nocturne, which resulted in a Grammy Award for Haden.

Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Avatar. Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba has been unfairly sidelined by some jazzers as a gifted lightweight, thanks to his occasional tendency towards grandstanding. But the 44-year-old from Havana has dropped plenty of clues as to his real powers - notably his dazzling duet performances with Chick Corea on the latter's 2003 Rendezvous in New York collection, which even upstaged guests such as Joshua Redman, Bobby McFerrin and the late Michael Brecker. This is a jazzers' album in its ingeniously devious postbop melodies and emphasis on improv

Rubalcaba himself is amazing, but inspires his bandmates to join him in fresh phrasings and out-of-body excursions. Though Wynton's sound is somewhat extant in the style of this music, it is also in the trumpet playing of newcomer Mike Rodriguez. But, the band is closer to mid-period Woody Shaw during "Hip Side," as brittle melody lines challenge younger modern and contemporary elements.

Rubalcaba was born Gonzalo Julio González Fonseca in Havana, Cuba into a musical family Later life and career. With Orquesta Aragón, Rubalcaba toured France and Africa in 1983 Discography.
