Things We Lost in the Fire is the fifth studio album by American indie rock band Low. It was released on January 22, 2001 on Kranky. In 2006, the album was performed live in its entirety as part of the All Tomorrow's Parties-curated Don't Look Back series. Things We Lost in the Fire was engineered by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago

sean I first saw Low (belatedly) at a former church on the UW Madison campus. They made me understand some things about life. Luke M. Luke M Melancholy, soulful, desolate. Like living in a midwest farmland in a time of drought and famine. When Low emerged from snowy Duluth, Minnesota with their 1994 Kramer-produced debut, I Could Live in Hope, their trudging funeral marches, sparse instrumentation, and Royal Albert Hall production values were strikingly fresh. Though they were preceded in the slowcore movement by earlier innovators like Galaxie 500 and Codeine, it was Low that defined the genre's sound. Of course, by their third album, 1996's The Curtain Hits the Cast, the formula began to wear thin. Vanity has never been Low's concern, and on Things We Lost in the Fire, their humility has never been so affecting. But a more attentive listen reveals a new lyrical direction.

Straight to the point, Things We Lost In The Fire is one of the most spine chillingly beautiful albums I own. The vocal duets between Sparhaw and Parker are at their best, the minimalist yet flawlessly crafted compositions involving strings, piano, percussion and guitar are masterful, as well as the ever present creepy ambience, blended together, create the end product; something that is intimate, majestic and very moving.

In ‘Closer’ they ponde. hings we lost in the fire/How’d we ever get by?, but Low need only the bare minimum, the sonic equivalent of a blanket and a Bunsen burner, to work their magic. The Morpheus drone of ‘Whitetail’ is all gasp and void, with words like stay out all night ringing out in the chill (more likely urging star-gazing than hedonism), and ‘Laser Beam’ is positively piercing in its simplicity. When they discover power chords in ‘Dinosaur Act’, it is as surprising as it is welcome

Things we lost to the flames Things we'll never see again All that we've amassed Sits before us, shattered into ash. These are the things, the things we lost The things we lost in the fire, fire, fire These are the things, the things we lost The things we lost in the fire, fire, fire. We sat and made a list Of all the things that we had Down the backs of table tops Ticket stubs and your diaries. I was the match and you were the rock Maybe we started this fire? We sat apart and watched All we had burned on the pyre. You said, "We were born with nothing And we sure as hell have nothing now" You said, "We were born with nothing And we sure as hell have nothing now".
