When Pink Floyd began work on The Final Cut, it was spearheaded by Waters, who wrote all the songs and did nearly all the vocals. The theme of the album was the repercussions of war. The album was Waters' last with Pink Floyd. He released a solo album called The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking the following year; the next Pink Floyd album (without Waters) came in 1987 with A Momentary Lapse of Reason. More songs from Pink Floyd. More songs about suicide.

Several of those listeners maintain that this is among Pink Floyd's finest efforts, and it certainly is an achievement of some kind - there's not only no other Floyd album quite like it, it has no close comparisons to anybody else's work (apart from Waters' own The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking, yet that had a stronger musical.

The Pink Floyd song performed by Pink in the movie ("In the Flesh?" at the start, and "In the Flesh" at the concert/rally) was actually sung by Bob Geldof. This was done to the dismay of Roger Waters, who felt Geldof's voice was too distinctly Irish. Instead, additional material which would have been included on the proposed soundtrack album was released in 1983 as a new album, "The Final Cut". One rumored title for the album was "Spare Bricks".
