Doctor Rockit’s second album, Indoor Fireworks, shows the same interest in electro-funk as The Music of Sound, but with more focus and diversity. The squealing funk of Roman Candle gives way to the breaks and lightness of You Are The. Hymnformation is a screed against big media in the form of a hymn. Rockit is the 7th track on the Gorillaz' 2007 album D-Sides. The music video is included inside the D-Sides album. Main Article: Rockit (Video). The music video was made in 2004 and was the only D-Sides music video ever made

The music exhibited strong improvisational aspect beyond the confines of jazz mainstream and showed influence from the electronic music of contemporary classical composers. Hancock's three records released in 1971–73 later became known as the "Mwandishi" albums, so-called after a Swahili name Hancock sometimes used during this era ("Mwandishi" is Swahili for "writer"). In 1983, Hancock had a pop hit with the single "Rockit" from the album Future Shock. It was the first jazz hip-hop song and became a worldwide anthem for breakdancers and for hip-hop in the 1980s. It was the first mainstream single to feature scratching, and also featured an innovative animated music video, which was directed by Godley and Creme and showed several robot-like.

When Rockit was released in the summer of ’83, it sounded like the future. Boasting an infectious rhythm and an other-wordly melody, the record soared to the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play charts, lingering for almost a month. In fact, Herbie had not had a hit since his classic 1973 album, Headhunters, which had spawned standards like Chameleon and Watermelon Man. With only one record left in his deal with Columbia, he was heavily in debt to the label. Along with sound engineer Martin Bisi, this trio also constituted a production team, who at the time were making a lot of underground records for the French-owned label Celluloid. Tony was like, ‘This is kinda like Herbie’s last shot, would you be interested?’ recalls Beinhorn, of this chance opportunity to work with a faded legend.

I bought this back in the year it was released and listened to it a few times. Its gathered dust until I played it on a long drive recently. I agree with both reviews below. It simply doesn't work as an album. You have the momentum of Wishmountain-like tracks contrasting with quite decent deep house tropes but even more awkwardly the try hard 'sample-an-apple-being eaten and put it through the fx system' experimentation. Okay its interesting but I find it a bi self induglent in tat experimentation cannot be the work in and of itself; its a process used to arrive at the final product. I find Herbert least likeable when he privaleges this wonky 'style' as an end in itself at the expense of good music. At his worst he produces a kind of intellectual freeze-dried micro house that fails to move. And then theres the opening (????) Cafe Beograd which really is just pure kitsch. Looking past this.....don't be perturbed...there are a few tracks that are good on this and will prick the ears of discerning listeners. If you see it for a few bucks pick it up.

This is an 'eneven' album. However, while the uneveness is the albums biggest weakness, it is also paradoxically, its biggest strength. I dont like 'boring' albums. I like things to be 'happening' in my music and too my music. If you can imagine a food tasing event, where lots of little samples from different meals are tasted (and some of those tastings are absolutely gorgeous and some are ok). Thats this album. Overall, some very good electronic music, elevated to excellent by the aura of fun that pervades its production and consumption (if like me you like a bit of a 'discovery'). A bit uneven as an album? Maybe a little. But its definetly not boring.

Doctor Rockit, Matthew Herbert’s downtempo alter ego, brings his first album, The Music of Sound on the sadly defunct Clear label (Herbert, however, has grievances with the label -- but that’s a different story). The album skips willy-nilly across the globe, stopping by the Middle East for “Café Beograd” to “Hong Kong.” There are moments of absolute beauty, such as “Song Without Words,” and moments that are funkily askew, like “Music Box.” He also seems to be wrestling with his other guises: “Babykiss” and “Theeeee Ennnnnd” aren’t far removed from his work as Wishmountain. But “Male James Bonding” is pure Doctor Rockit, with its nimble spy funk, while “A Quiet Week in the House” is a subdued house track. Although the album as a whole is uneven, it’s still worthy every penny.
