So Long, Savannah Stepping out from under the cover of a band name, To The Races marks Bachmann's proper eponymous debut, and the music echoes the change to a more direct, Spartan approach. Self-recorded in a hotel in the Outer Banks town of Buxton, NC, these songs reveal an expert songwriter further honing his craft after more than a dozen releases.
To the Races is Bachmann’s debut, he of the double & and of the musical persuasion, which finds the former & frontman’ all alone, giving the performance of his already noteworthy career. To the Races was written in the back of a van. While it was Bachmann’s touring van, he was not actually on tour at the time. Instead, he was living in some kind of self-created exile from the world at large, a state which obviously hugely influenced the songwriting process, before returning to his North Carolina home in winter to record this spare masterpiece in a hotel. It’s one of the more unabashed and unrestrained songs on the album, while still retaining that lonesome quality, but is particularly clever in its use of analogy in desperation. Lonesome Warrior is another undeniably great track featuring two of his guests, Devotchka’s Tom Hagerman on violin and backing vocalist Miranda Brown.
With his hypnotic voice soaring high in the mix, Eric Bachmann has recorded a spine-tingling, magnificent album with To the Races. As a self-titled solo excursion away from Bachmanns Crooked Fingers solo project, its telling that this is the most intimate collection of songs in the cult heros catalogue. Adorned with dense acoustic guitar, some violin, and spare harmony vocals, Bachmann offers up a heady, contemporary collection of troubadour songs. Man O War begins unassumingly enough before capturing the listener in a storm of imagery

Over a softly picked guitar, Eric Bachmann tells a loose tale centered on itinerancy and aquatic imagery, his own voice rising and ebbing like the tide as it escalates up the register from occasionally Dylaneqsue phrasing to a full-on Tim Buckley howl. Like Ashby at his best - think The Last Detail, Coming Home, or Harold and Maude - Bachmann conveys an almost visceral sense of contingency. If only the rest of To the Races were as entrancing as its first song, Bachmann would really be on to something. As it is, the album earns praise, but reserved praise; its forlorn, vagabond ways wander over the same turf a few times too many. Certainly Bachmann has traveled far from his mid-'90s days of hipster irony as frontman for the Archers of Loaf - there are no icky mettles here, only starry night skies and sorrowful departures.
