Rest is the fifth album by French musician and actor Charlotte Gainsbourg. It was primarily produced by French electronic musician SebastiAn, and released on 17 November 2017 by Because Music. It is her first album release in six years, and features collaborations with Paul McCartney, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, Owen Pallett and Connan Mockasin, among others. The tracks "Rest" and "Deadly Valentine" were released as singles and music videos, both directed by Gainsbourg herself.

Charlotte Lucy Gainsbourg (born 21 July 1971) is an Anglo-French actor and singer. She is the daughter of English actress Jane Birkin and French singer and songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. After making her musical debut with her father on the song "Lemon Incest" at the age of 12, she released an album with her father at the age of 15. More than 20 years passed before she released the first of four albums as an adult (5:55, IRM, Stage Whisper and Rest) to commercial and critical success

The album is Charlotte's most personal to date, and is produced by acclaimed Grammy nominated entalist Beck. What started as a brief recording session between Charlotte Gainsbourg and Beck ended up to be the body of work that is IRM. Over the course of a year and a half of writing and recording together, Beck's role grew to encompass all aspects of the creative process. He worked seamlessly with Charlotte co writing the lyrics and produced and mixed the recording. This is the first time he has ever been so involved in another artist's work.

Then Charlotte Gainsbourg nearly died. Weeks after a minor water skiing accident, she went to the doctor with headaches only to learn her hemorrhaged head was filled with blood. After summer 2007 (and successful brain surgery), the actress-singer filmed three intense movies including Lars von Trier's frightful Antichrist, in which she plays a grieving mother who wanders around an isolated cabin without pants on before mutilating her genitals. She also recorded IRM, a decidedly more palatable post-trauma piece.

Despite being sold as an album by Charlotte Gainsbourg, Beck's presence is less that of billed producer, and more collaborator, present in every frame. He wrote all of the English lyrics based on fragments and ideas fed to him by Gainsbourg, but seems to have widened the focus to extend far beyond the black leather couch. This is A Good Thing for the pair of them. There was the fear that he might use IRM as a chance to tinker with the family jewels; to get his Jean-Claude Vannier on in an attempt to finish what he'd dabbled in on Sea Change's ‘Paper Tiger'. It'll undoubtedly be written that ‘Time Of The Assassins' and ‘Vanities' satisfy that urge, but David Campbell's (Beck's father) string arrangements weigh with far more gravitas, in the latter employing harps to create the kind of richly detailed atmospheric darkness of which the great soundtrack composers might well find themselves envious.
