As Brit pop erupted in the UK, Placebo stood staunchly in the shadows, fluttering their mascara-covered eyelashes and drawing on Nirvana, glam rock and alternative influences to become a major force. On the back of the hit single Nancy Boy, debut album Placebo (1996) was a surprise hit, thrashing away with fevered alt rock spirit, while Molko played with androgyny, sexuality and outsider angst.

Slinging their androgyny-coated brand of alternative rock since the mid-90s, Placebo have returned with the impending release of their new album Loud Like Love. Their first full-length release since 2009’s Battle for the Sun, the new album cements Steve Forrest’s place in the line-up, after the departure of former drummer Steve Hewitt in 2007. Fronted by the always emotive and often angsty Brian Molko, Loud Like Love sees the band successfully interfacing their trademarked Placebo-edged rock with today’s electronic production techniques. Placebo – Loud Like Love. MF: This is your second album with the band? SF: Yeah, it’s my second LP.

Bolstered by this unexpected serendipity, Placebo pranced cocksure and panda-eyed into a musical landscape awash with macho posturing and male bravado. Their heroes, Lou Reed, Marc Bolan and David Bowie among them, had all pushed the boundaries of androgyny and sexuality in the 70s but Placebo found themselves thrust unwillingly into a musical landscape that, broadly speaking, had little time to confront the prudish attitudes of the bourgeois. But what of the future of Placebo? Molko reveals that he is currently writing songs for the band’s as yet untitled eighth album, a project that will no doubt become the main focus of their 2018.
