Her debut album Smooth & Legit followed on April 27, 1990 (peaking at on the R&B/Hip Hop chart) and was produced by her brother Chris Stokes and Arabian Prince. Two singles "You Gotta Be Real" and "Where is the Money?" followed but did not garner much airplay. Later that year, she collaborated with the R&B group Immature on their single "We Got It" which was released as a single in 1996 and became a hit, peaking at on the Hot 100 and on the R&B chart. She released a stand-alone single, "Love & Happiness" which had some airplay on the R&B stations.

Man, it's a hot one Like seven inches from the midday sun I hear you whisper and the words melt everyone But you stay so cool My muñequita, my Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa You're my reason for reason, the step in my groove. that can be so smooth Gimme your heart, make it real, or else forget about it. I'll tell you one thing If you would leave it would be a crying shame In every breath and every word I hear your name calling me out Out from the barrio, you hear my rhythm from your radio You feel the turning of the world so soft and slow Turning you round and round. To this day. You got to have a big sense of humor about those kinds of things. It’s like the gift that kept on giving.

A1 You Gotta Be Real (Single Version) 4:01. A2 You Gotta Be Real (House Version) 3:52.

I'll Do 4 U by Father MC feat. Mary J. Blige (1990). Multiple Elements Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B.

Smooth's eponymous sophomore album was released in 1995. A sleeker produced, raunchier-themed set - the album features a cameo appearance by her then TNT-labelmate, 2Pac. The same year, however, she performed a rap cameo in Immature's top 10 pop single, "We Got I. Shortly thereafter she left TNT and Jive Records, signing a new deal with Perspective/A&M Records. Smooth's junior album, Reality, was released in March 1998. Smooth released a song independently, "Just To Need You," in 2002. The song, the last to be recorded under the moniker Smooth, features Stokes singing with a stronger style. Afterwards, she recorded two singles under the pseudonym Needa S, a play on the last syllable of her given name and the initial of her last name.
