Despite several terrific tracks, English Settlement seems more a transitional album than anything else, although the textural sound of the album is quite remarkable, indicating the direction they would take in their post-touring incarnation.

Settlement" comes off as a semi-concept album, sampling the rebellious optimism (not to mention the occasional musical idea) of the first psychedelic era of the late 60's and applying it to a series of vignettes that explore youth, gender roles, history, and, most of all, the comforts and pitfalls of tradition. In the end, the pastoral vibe of the album reflects a kind of disillusionment for the scene that was evolving around them

English Settlement is XTC's second best album (behind Drums and Wires), and it most accurately depicts their sound, which is a mixture of new wave, pop, reggae and a hint of punk. The band was clearly in transition on this one, which allows for a little bit of everything. What I like most about this album is its consistent sound throughout. There isn't a track that sounds like it doesn't belong on the album, as is the case with so many bands out there. Colin Moulding's bass playing is superior on this one, and Andy Partridge's vocals are in top form.

It is an exceptionally ripe collection of ideas: one moment a jittery anti-violence chant ( Melt the Guns ), the next a double-speed pastoral skank ( English Roundabout ). He also toned down some of their trademark dissonance for chiming ’60s guitars, particularly on the stunning single Senses Working Overtime -a song about his impending nervous breakdown-and the unsettlingly sweet warning shot All of a Sudden (It’s Too Late).
