Mozart's "37th symphony" is actually Michael Haydn's 25th symphony; Mozart only added a 20-bar slow introduction to it. The symphonies K. 19b, 66c, 66d, 66e, An. 1. 7, and An. 8 are lost, and have not been proven to be Mozart's work: they have not been included in the list below. The symphony numbers in the range 42 to 56 are sometimes used for symphonic works that were not numbered in the 1-41 sequence. They have been included for completeness, although they are out of chronological sequence. In addition, some authentic symphonies were never given numbers

As it is in the later of the two versions, Hogwood posits that this incarnation represents Mozart's own last thoughts on the subject of this most famous of his symphonic works, although it likely won't supplant the familiar first version anytime soon. The album features the composer's entire symphonic legacy in different genres. His two symphonies are traditional four-movement cycles in the vein of Borodin's and Balakirev's epic compositions. Lyapunov's works are performed by the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra and its leader Evgeny Svetlanov, a distinguished master of interpretation of Russian symphonic music. The album also includes Polonaise performed by the USSR Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra conducted by Algis Žiūraitis.
