Consuming Impulse is the second album by Dutch death metal band Pestilence. It was reissued along with Testimony of the Ancients on Roadrunner Records' Two from the Vault series. The song "Out of the Body" was covered by fellow Netherlands melodic death metal band Callenish Circle as a bonus track for their 2003 release My Passion // Your Pain. Patrick Mameli - guitar, bass. No album surpasses Consuming Impulse in the utter devastation is wreaks. Pestilence themselves didn't try to top their achievement, knowing full well that an attempt would only produce an inferior derivative. This is not a flawless record but it's pretty close and when it comes to crafting a work of pure savagery mixed with depraved melody, there is no equal. Consuming Impulse is one intense album. I'd say this album is definitely up there with classic death metal albums such as Death's Leprosy, Obituary's Slowly We Rot, and Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness. All of these albums were released in 1988 or 1989.

Consuming Impulse is clearly old school death metal epitomized; and opening track Dehydrated makes no issue of making that absolutely apparent. Wasting no time with a stupid, irrelevant sample or pointless build-up, the song punches straight into an excellent tremolo picked riff backed by great, audible bass and furious but tight drumming. Consuming Impulse definitely deserves it's status as a death metal classic. This is one of the albums that laid the foundation for one of the most famous and controversial genres in music, and it's still an absolute heavyweight when contending with anything more recent. For everything death metal should be and a few riffs more, listen to this album.
