Imitation Electric Piano is a British post-rock band, formed in 1999 by Stereolab bassist Simon Johns and Andrew Blake on guitar. They recorded their eponymous instrumental first EP for Duophonic Records' 'Super 45s' series in 1999. The band's first album, Trinity Neon was released in 2003.
Formed by the Stereolab bassist Simon Johns in 1999, the . Heavy on vintage synth sounds and unconventional time signatures, this 2001 CD EP release displays distinct prog rock influences, notably of the 1960s and '70s art-rock band Soft Machine, on a collection of instrumental tracks that includes the appropriately named "Progressive Rock," the Tortoise-like "(A Drunken Lunge Through) Deep Rice Pudding" and the jazzy "The Sidecar Register.
Imitation Electric Piano. November 10 2006, 12:00am, The Times. Blow It Up, Burn It Down, Kick It Till It Bleeds. Simon Johns’s hitherto instrumental indie combo is improved, on this third album, by the arrival of Mary Hampton, whose vocals lend a stately clarity to the fragrant indie-baroque of Come into Force and wired pop gems such as What We Do We Do. The lack of anything resembling production isn’t a problem; feeling as though you’re sitting in on a particularly inspired rehearsal merely adds to the songs’ scuffed allure. Blow It Up, Burn It Down, Kick It 'Til It Bleeds (Drag City). After two vocal-free releases (a self-titled EP in 2001 and the prog-jam opus Trinity Neon in ’03), Imitation Electric Piano has added the unlikely voice of Brighton, England, folksinger Mary Hampton to its ranks. While Johns’s solid, sometimes playful compositions often recall his day band’s halcyon era, Hampton’s sweet and earthy vocal melodies help IEP forge a distinct identity. But the album reaches its conceptual peak with a sublimely futuristic, reverb-drenched take on the traditional sea chantey Leave Her Johnny. IEP’s ideas and execution are so potent, it’s not difficult to imagine this side project garnering a league of fanatics all its own. - Kevin Wolfe.
Stereolab's Simon Johns and his band Imitation Electric Piano haven't forgotten those years. Working with t Lee Adams, drummer Ashley Marlowe, bassist Andrew Blake and a few others, Johns' band follows a similar trajectory as a few bands mentioned above, most notably the wry progressive psyche of early Soft Machine and other like-minded bands such as National Health.
