The result is Enlightened Paramecium, eight tracks of psychedelic rock that led to success on the college radio market. Although the full-length Conscious Pilot from which these tracks are taken was eventually scrapped, the band launched a national club tour in support of the sampler disc, and continued writing and performing new songs. With four vocalists, male and female, the songs on the album have a textured feel, and a number of vocal combinations are employed. The six-member group also utilizes a wide variety of instruments, including the sitar, dijeridoo, and Chinese harp to create a worldly sound that could only come from a group as diverse in ethnic and religious background as Solar Tribe.

Panicsville is a Chicago noise music group founded in 1992 by Andy Ortmann (founder of Nihilist Records) with David Forquer and Ryan Kohler. It has become an ongoing project for Ortmann to work with other musicians. Early shows consisted of pelting the audience with items like dry ice, meat, blood and insects.

The album is inspired by Hippolytus, a play by Euripides. Holter recorded Tragedy with electronic instrumentation, largely out of necessity, since she lacked the funds to hire session musicians.
