IRENE MAWELA - or VHO-IRENE as she is respectfully called by her loyal Tshivenda fanbase - was one of the small pool of talented musicians providing listeners of the SABC radio stations with a stream of beautiful music. Irene’s contributions inspired a new generation of Venda recording artists including ERIC MUKHESE, ELVIS MANDIZA and ALPHEUS RAMAVHEA, all of whom enlisted Irene as a backing vocalist and champion of their music. Her tireless work in promoting Tshivenda music was recognised when she received the prestigious ‘NAMBI YA DZINAMBI’ (’BEST SINGER’) award from the SABC in 1982, 1983 and 1984.

Alpheus Alpheus was born and raised in the United Kingdom before relocating to Jamaica, where he was groomed for stardom by the legendary Studio One producer Coxsone Dodd. His debut album Quality Time followed in 1999. Alpheus - I See You Through My Window 13. Alpheus - Bad Bwoy 14. Alpheus - It's You Alone Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's Studio One was one of the foundational reggae recording studios in '60s and '70s Jamaica - Lee Perry was engineer there in the '60s, and it's where the Wailers made some of their earliest and best ska recordings. During reggae's heyday in the '70s, bands like the Soul Vendors and the Sound Dimension recorded instrumental tracks (or "rhythms") there that became the basis for countless hit singles by a variety of singers.
The 14-track album, which of course featured a whole heap of classic Studio One riddims, introduced Alpheus’ rich and warm vocal delivery to the reggae world. It was obvious a major talent had arrived and although the many fans he gained through this well received set where longing for a next Studio One set it didn’t happen. Instead Alphheus started working with French duo Bost & Bim, who produced his sophomore album Everything For A Reason, which hit the streets in 2007. Halfway the album the very romantic ballad Secret Rendezvous slows things down, thus giving the listener the opportunity to take a deep breath before he/she starts to listen to the next part of this collection. The energetic sounding ska piece Pass The Test is a very entertaining effort across another classic riddim.
