Tom Waits's first album "Closing Time" is appropriately titled, because it perfectly captures the mood of the bar between 1:45 - 2:00 . This is one of the definitive late night listening discs in my CD collection, and if I had a dollar for every time I've slipped this one on after a night at the bars I could quit my day job. Probably the best known song off of "Closing Time" is the opening song "Ol '55" which was later to be covered by The Eagles and Richie Havens, although neither captured the melancholy mood created by Waits.

Tom Waits wrote Closing Time, his debut album, when he was just 24. He was working at a coffee house/club and performing there every Monday night. He lucked out in Troubadour, a legendary nightclub located in West Hollywood, California, where rock manager Herb Cohen discovered Waits during an amateur night. The album was recorded in spring 1973. Jazz and a bit of folk. Album magique de Tom Waits, son premier, le plus abouti, le plus sincère, le plus émouvant, que j'écoute en boucle depuis des semaines : la voix n'est pas encore bourrée de tics, elle est juste authentique, le piano a un son si touchant, les guitares vont à l'essentiel, les textes sont si purs, les mélodies sont belles à pleurer, les violons, et surtout, cet enchaînement des titres est sublime,qui évoque le montage d'un film.
