Algiers – You’re The Captain (Xtra Mile Recordings). CD DL. Out Now. Sheffield based Algiers bring the energy and DIY sensibilities of punk, fusing it with indie on their new album. If there’s a single UK label that constantly and consistently releases incredible music, it’s Xtra Mile. So much so that even some of the bigger boys from across the pond, Against Me! and Far to name but two, have utilised the services of this musical Garden of Eden for their UK distribution
You’re The Captain is the band’s debut full-length and comes with ten brand spankin’ new songs on which Algiers sounds like the UK’s answer to Death Cab For Cutie, complete with softly twinkling guitars and quirky lyrics. But they’ll just as well settle for a Biffy Clyro reference, which can be heard on the title track. Despite falling short of greatness, You’re The Captain is an album that is worth revisiting and one that warrants a lot of fun and some great melodies to boot. xtra mile recordings. The Captain is the solo debut album of Australian country music singer Kasey Chambers. The Captain won the 1999 ARIA Music Award for Best Country Album. Prior to releasing this album, Chambers had performed more than a decade with her family's Dead Ringer Band, a popular Australian country music group. The title track was featured in "He Is Risen", an episode of The Sopranos, while "The Hard Way" was featured in the season 2 episode of Lost, "Two for the Road".
Algiers are a heavy band, though not so much in sound as in effect-they’re getting shit off their chest and piling it directly onto yours. Rather than promote uplift, out-of-body ecstasy, and communion with the heavens, Algiers weigh you down with the burden of American history, a despair born of centuries of systemic oppression, and the soul-crushing futility of hoping for a change that never comes.
Algiers – You’re The Captain. Released this week on Xtra Mile Recordings, the debut record of Sheffield based duo Algiers kicks off with new single ‘Mother’. Its a track that definitely benefits from repeat listens, but with just two members making all the noise, the biggest problem I find myself having to overcome is the lack of bass – a problem that I find recurs a few times throughout the album. As we get towards the end of the record, ‘Two Currents Of Sea Drifts’ ups the tempo again. Out of the up-tempo tracks on the album this is the one that seems to work the best. Title track ‘You’re The Captain’ follows and is a solid track, another that definitely benefits from repeat listens, and being equipped with lyrics like Bathtubs of the Ganges overspill into the Nile it conjures up some interesting images.

Algiers - "Blood" from Algiers on Vimeo. You might have picked out from the clunky and clumsy descriptions here that I’m struggling to truly convey the majesty which lies at the heart of this fantastic record. There’s just so much going on, so much to wonder at.
