Over the years Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers have gone back to their roots – returning to the intimacy of small venues such as their historic twenty show run in 1997 at the Fillmore in San Francisco, their five night stand at Chicago’s Vic Theatre in 2003 and, more recently, two nights in 2011 at the Plaza del Sol Performance Hall at Cal. State Northridge to benefit LA local public radio station KCSN. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ 2013 Summer Tour comes as the band takes a break from the studio where they are recording their highly anticipated follow up to 2010’s Mojo.

In 2013, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played extended residencies at the Beacon Theater in New York and the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles, reaching well past their hits. He also delved into his music collection with a Sirius XM radio show, Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure, which he began in 2005. In 2007, Mr. Petty circled back to his beginnings when he reassembled Mudcrutch - with Mr. Tench and Mr. Campbell along with the band’s founding members Tom Leadon and Randall Marsh - to make a belated debut album and tour in 2007; a second album and tour followed in 2016

Formed in 1976, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers show no signs of slowing down, even three decades since their self-titled debut. Live 2013, features 11 tracks from the Heartbreakers' 2013 residencies at New York's Beacon Theatre and Los Angeles' Fonda Theatre, as well as highlights from last year's Bonnaroo Festival. Hypnotic Eye, which features the recently released track "American Dream Plan B, has already received much praise from critics. Rolling Stone recently referred to the album as "maximum rock & roll" and "a decisive return to the concise Sixties-rock classicism of his first great New Wave era albums

From the late Nineties through the early 2010s the group leaned heavily on their many hits when they toured, along with a smattering of tunes from whatever their latest album was at the moment, but in 2013 they did a run of special theater shows at the Beacon in New York and the Fonda in Los Angeles that dramatically broadened the scope. Many of the deep cuts they hope to revive on the 40th anniversary tour are in regular rotation on Tom Petty Radio, a SiriusXM channel that has occupied much of Petty’s time since the end of the last Heartbreakers tour in 2014.
