After battling through illness, Edwyn Collins has defied expectations and released a film documenting his arduous recovery. The documentary follows Edwyn and his wife Grace in the wake of his strokes as he relearns to walk, talk, draw, read and write words before he eventually goes on to re-master the art of writing the three (or four) minute pop nugget. It’s astonishing as you watch his story unfold that Edwyn, although still not fully recovered, has now reached the point where he’s even branched out and managed.

The Possibilities Are Endless is a film, a hymn to happiness about Edwyn Collins. Due for release by Pulse Films in UK cinemas on 7th November 2014 ‘The Possibilities. ’ is the third feature from directing talents Edward Lovelace and James Hall. The film received its world premiere at South by Southwest earlier this year.

The soundtrack to the film was put together by Collins and two of his longtime collaborators, Sebastian Lewsley and Carwyn Ellis. It mainly features the introspective side of Collins' music, with many songs taken from his subtle 2007 album Home Again (his last recordings made before the stroke), the affecting "Down the Line" from the post-stroke Understated, and one, "I've Got It Bad," from his classic Gorgeous George album. It also features some quiet, soundtracky instrumentals, a pleasant ballad written and sung by Collins' son William, and a few new songs.

Released in cinemas this week The Possibilities Are Endless tells the story of Edwyn Collins’ recovery after two strokes, immersing the viewer in his post-incident confusion. Even in isolation, the soundtrack has plenty of impact. Opener ‘Leviathan Instrumental’ builds from a simple acoustic strum to a storm of piano, crashing waves and sound effects, a mood quickly cut by the sparse ‘Quite Like Silver’. The album is loaded with poignancy, but best is a re-recorded version of 1987 single ‘Don’t Shilly Shally’, the resounding pep of which shows the fire in Collins’ belly is the same as it ever.
