Muntagna Nera is the name of a legendary Italo-Belgian music collective which used to perform a unique collection of southern Italian torch songs in the years between 1978 and 1983 in the Limburg mining region. The songs, which include traditional tammuraiatas as well as café chantant, have a raw and intuitive sound to them. Thirty years after the group was disbanded Björn Schmelzer reunited the singers again. Together with his ensemble Graindelavoix he brings the unique repertoire of the Limburg coal mine blues back to life.

Graindelavoix was founded in the early 21st century by anthropologist and ethnomusicologist Björn Schmelzer with public appearances following shortly thereafter. The first recording, Ockeghem’s Missa Caput, released in 2006 on the Glossa label immediately placed graindelavoix on the international scene. Each new project begins with a concrete musical gesture, a repertoire or a work which envelops the complex layering of time and the operative aspects of practice.
With this album, Björn Schmelzer and Belgian ensemble Graindelavoix invite listeners into the strange world of artistic clashes and ruptures, featuring sacred works by Orazio Vecchi, a composer better known for his secular music popular in Venice. Graindelavoix’s customary uncompromising and clearly provocative vocal sound is complete with both artfully-executed ornamentations and attention to ensemble needs.
