Children of God, one of the band's strongest releases, established Gira as an Old Testament tyrant obsessed with the nature of love, human frailty, and the midnight beauty of black orchids. Later, with the addition of Jarboe, Gira brought more varied sounds into the mix, melding hooks and spatial variation to the unwavering rhythms.

Children of God was re-issued along with the World of Skin compilation (minus the covers) on CD in 1997 as Children of God/World of Skin. On this re-release, the original album version of "Our Love Lies" was replaced with the version included on the Love Will Tear Us Apart EP. Also, the re-release added "Damn You to Hell" and "I'll Swallow You" (under one title as "I'll Swallow You") from the New Mind single as a bonus.

Swans have that and then some. Children of God explodes with the shattering New Mind, and does not let up once during its seventy minute running time. Even during the softest moments, a magical intensity still prevails – the signature Swans vibe that is present in every moment of their music. Whilst adjectives such as terrifying and the haunting adequately sum up this album, ‘bizarre’ also springs to mind. The dissonant cacophony of trumpets that rips through Like a Drug violently collides with the nonsensical sounds that spring from Jarboe’s throat during the chorus; devastatingly unique to say the least. Meanwhile, the title track sounds like a fanatical church ceremony gone off the rails, and it sums up the album perfectly; the fervour running through this music is genuine, crushing and absolutely astonishing.
