Johann Strauss II, also known as Johann Baptist Strauss or Johann Strauss, J. the Younger, or the Son (German: Sohn), was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 400 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. In his lifetime, he was known as "The Waltz King", and was largely then responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century.

About Johann Strauss, Jr. Ah, Strauss, the Waltz King. Strauss is not schmaltz for the musical neophyte; his are singular works from a composer who understood how to blend the popular with "high" art, and who knew how to make the public dance. The waltz was the craze of Vienna, the craze of all of Europe. Richard Strauss (no relation) said of Johann: "Of all the God-gifted dispensers of joy, is the most endearing.
Johann Strauss II (or Johann Strauss the Younger, or Johann Strauss J. (October 25, 1825 - June 3, 1899) was an Austrian and German composer known especially for his waltzes, such as The Blue Danube. Popular Sheet Music: on 8notes. His brothers Josef Strauss and Eduard Strauss were also composers; but Johann II is the most famous of the family. He was known in his lifetime as 'the waltz king,' and the popularity of the waltz in Vienna through the 19th century is due in large part to him. He became the 'waltz king' by his revolutionary elevation of the waltz from lowly peasant dance to sparkling entertainment for the royal Habsburg court.
Johann Strauss II: A Life. The Strauss family led Europeans a merry waltz in a repressive age. But what was the secret that kept Johann II, the greatest Strauss, from dancing himself? If any composer could be said to have discovered the secret of eternal youth, it was Johann Strauss II. For more than 40 years, he directed the finest salon orchestras of 19th century Europe with a violin in one hand, a bow in the other, and inspired a dance craze to rival anything in nightclubs today. Strauss quickly became an icon, the widely adored Peter Pan of the ballroom scene. A famous photograph, taken on his veranda in 1894 alongside his friend and admirer Brahms (see page 37), speaks volumes. Brahms at 61, with his long grey beard, is every inch the ageing grandee. The charismatic Strauss, with a full head of swept-back, jet-black hair still looks youthful – remarkably he was nearly 70.
