The city of Istanbul has been known by a number of different names. The most notable names besides the modern Turkish name are Byzantium, Constantinople, and Stamboul. According to Pliny the Elder the first name of Byzantium was Lygos. This may have been the name of a Thracian settlement situated on the site of the later city, near the point of the peninsula (Sarayburnu).

An excellent introduction to Istanbul, especially its evolution from the 1930s to the 2000s - focusing on the years of Pamuk's childhood and adolescence in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Having visited Istanbul in February 201, I wanted to try to get to the heart of this great city. Pamuk's book took me a long way in and made me want to read his novels. It was also a touching personal history.
