The Essential UFO is a greatest hits album by UFO, released in 1992. This compilation covers the classic Michael Schenker era from 1974–79, with tracks from Phenomenon, Force It, No Heavy Petting, Lights Out, Obsession, and the live Strangers in the Night. The tracks are arranged almost completely chronologically, except the Obsession ('78) tracks are programmed before the Lights Out ('77) tracks.
UFO's heavy metal recipe rocked hard in all the right places, fueled by underrated guitar playing from ex-Scorpion Michael Schenker and the high-strung vocal approach of Phil Mogg. Essential UFO covers 16 of their best tracks, with the absence of Eddie Cochrane's "C'mon Everybody" being this compilation's only major drawback.
The following is a comprehensive discography of UFO, an English hard rock band formed in 1969. The band became a transitional band between early hard rock and heavy metal and the new wave of British heavy metal. UFO's influence was strongly felt in the 1980s heavy metal scene and they have been cited as a primary influence of Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, Joey Tempest of Europe, Frank Hannon of Tesla, and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, among others.
