Like a Virgin" is a song recorded by American singer Madonna for her second studio album Like a Virgin (1984). It was released on October 31, 1984, by Sire Records as the album's lead single. The song was written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, and produced by Nile Rodgers; Steinberg said that the song was inspired by his personal experiences of romance. Like a Virgin" was chosen for Madonna by Michael Ostin of Warner Bros. Records after listening to a demo sung by Kelly.

Following the success of her self-titled debut album, Madonna wanted to become the record producer of her next album. However, her label was not ready to give her the artistic freedom and she chose Nile Rodgers instead to produce the album due to his work with David Bowie. Madonna wrote six songs on the record, five of which feature Steve Bray as a co-writer.
Like a Virgin is the second album by Madonna, released on November 12, 1984. It was re-released worldwide in 1985, with the bonus track "Into the Groove". In May 2001, Warner Bros. released a remastered version of Like a Virgin (alongside Madonna and True Blue). The album spawned five singles: "Like a Virgin", "Material Girl", "Angel", "Into the Groove" and "Dress You Up". Worldwide, Like a Virgin sold 25 million copies.

Alex from Gatineau, CanadaDuring "Like A Virgin" album recording sessions, Nile Rodgers was unconvinced this song would fly as a single. He insisted the track was not strong enough as a dance track to be passable as the first single from Madonna's album. Rodgers preferred the peppy "Material Girl" as the album's first offering. and was proven the wiser.
