Victor Assis Brasil (born August 28, 1945; died 1981) was a Brazilian jazz saxophonist. He was the brother of classical pianist João Carlos Assis Brasil. He studied at Berklee College of Music and later taught improvisation technique in Brazil. He also toured on three continents. He is said to have been more popular outside Brazil than in it and his style was strongly influenced by non-Brazilian musicians.

December 6, 2017 In News. Hailed as one of the country’s greatest saxophonists of all time. Victor Assis Brasil’s 1970 LP Esperanto is being rereleased for the first time, by Far Out Recordings this February. The album features four original compositions plus a latin-jazz cover of Jimmy Heath’s ‘Ginger Bread Boy’, and boasting a band filled with Brazilian music greats including Dom Salvador (bass), Edison Machado (drums), Helio Delmiro (guitar) and Edson Lobo (Bass).
Victor Assis Brasil's passing in 1981 at the age of 35 was felt by jazz fans inside and outside his home country of Brazil. He was a major talent in the 1970s whose South American-bop mashups earned him a ticket to tour three continents. Far Out Recordings has repackaged two of his finest LPs on a new CD/vinyl/digital download. An aunt gave him his first saxophone at 14. By 18, the younger Brasil had his debut album done and dusted. A second release followed at 19. During his all-too-short career, Brasil studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. He played with some of the greats -Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Chick Corea and Ron Carter among them.
Victor Assis Brasil (August 28, 1945 – 1981) was a Brazilian jazz saxophonist.
On Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim, Victor Assis Brasil morphed Jobim’s soothing originals into raw, deep jazz cuts: a product of its time as the smooth 'n' easy groove of the bossa beat no longer reflected the politics of a nation under the cosh of military dictatorship. Victor Assis Brasil passed away aged just thirty-five, due to a rare circulatory disease, but by this point his status was already cemented as one of the most talented musicians in Brazil’s history.
