Profile: Born March 7, 1961 in Gävle, is a Swedish guitarist educated at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and Juilliard School in New York.

Mats Bergström has recorded for such labels as BIS, Naxos, Caprice and Proprius. His 1995 Areco Music CD, "With a little help from my friends", was a crossover effort (works by Ravel, de Falla, Chick Corea, Gershwin, et. that was quite in the spirit of chamber collaboration, as it featured Christian Bergqvist (violin), Sam Bengtsson (electric bass guitar), Anna Norberg (flute), and many others on various tracks. He recorded a disc of his arrangements of Schubert sonatas for the Proprius label in 2010 that featured Nils-Erik Sparf, on violin and viola, and other artists. During the 2011 BBC Proms, his performance of Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint was a major success at the Royal Albert Hall. The following year his recording of the same piece was released on CD and Blu-ray.

The manuscript of Schubert"s Sonata in D Major, D 384 is dated "März 1816" and bears the title Sonate pour Pianoforte et Violons. In 1836 Diabelli & Co. published this and two more sonatas as Opus 137 with the title Drei Sonatinen für Piano-Forte und Violine. It is not sure, or even probable, that the latter is actually based on the former version. Musicologists believe that yet another manuscript existed.

Already in his lifetime some of his most popular songs appeared with simplified guitar accompaniment, marketed by music publishers wanting to exploit the growing market for domestic music-making.
