Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. Six years on and we are in a different world. Beginning and ending in Stygian gloom, The Sorrowful Tale depicts the last moments of a man about to commit suicide. No contrived redemption à la Strauss, and towards the end the Szczecin Philharmonic recording even reinstates the gunshot that Karowicz later replaced with a tom-tom: as if the narrative were not already explicit enough.

Kulka and Kord have pleasant sport with the Violin Concerto which cuts a stylish dash but remains light of heart. This is music that is pleasingly rounded and occupies a folk serenade tradition with the Glazunov, de Boeck, Ivanovs and Tchaikovsky concertos stretching back to Bruch. Its themes are memorable superior for example to anything in the Saint-Saëns concertos if not to Caprice Andalou, Havanaise and Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. Amongst the three versions I have heard there is little to choose. The couplings all differ (Chandos, Olympia and Dux all match Eternal Songs with Karłowicz’s other tone poems) and certainly to have the splendours of the Violin Concerto matched with the high hills romanticism of Eternal Songs makes for a potent combination. The disc is generously packed and interpretative and audio values are high.

In September 2017, yet another album of Tasmin Little’s is coming out, with her interpretations with of pieces by Polish composers: Violin Concerto No. 1 (1916) and Violin Concerto No. 2 (1932-33) by Szymanowski and Mieczysław Karłowicz ’s Violin Concerto in A major. Little is accompanied by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner. The oldest of the concerts was composed during the partitions, another during the Great War, while the last was written when the Second Polish Republic was being built.
