The Queen's Guard and Queen's Life Guard (called King's Guard and King's Life Guard when the reigning monarch is male) are the names given to contingents of infantry and cavalry soldiers charged with guarding the official royal residences in the United Kingdom. The British Army has regiments of both Horse Guards and Foot Guards predating the English Restoration (1660), and since the reign of King Charles II these regiments have been responsible for guarding the Sovereign's palaces.

Some equerry to the Queen, a Guards officer, took us to one side and showed us what we had to do," Paul McCartney recalled in Anthology. 'Approach Her Majesty like this and never turn your back on her, and don't talk to her unless she talks to yo. All of those things. Despite the formality of the proceedings, the Beatles signed autographs for about 50 other recipients, including one man who told McCartney, "I want it for my daughter. The Christmas message was started by The Queen's grandfather, King George V. King George had reigned since 1910, but it was not until 1932 that he delivered his first Christmas message. The original idea for a Christmas speech by the Sovereign was mooted in 1932 by Sir John Reith, the visionary founding father of the BBC, to inaugurate the Empire Service (now the BBC World Service). And so, on Christmas Day, 1932, King George V spoke on the 'wireless' to the Empire from a small office at Sandringham. The transmission was an exercise of contemporary logistic brilliance. From there connection was made to BBC transmitters in the Home Service, and to the Empire Broadcasting Station at Daventry with its six short-wave transmitters. The General Post Office was used to reach Australia, Canada, India, Kenya and South Africa.
As head of an empire that was waning, where many citizens experienced extreme poverty and autocratic rule, Nicholas II found himself caught between a world war and the discontent of his own people. The explosive mix would hasten his fall from monarch to executed prisoner in just over a year. The killing of Nicholas II, tsar from 1894 until his forced abdication in 1917, saw the collapse of Russia’s royal family. Did the king of England sell the tsar and his family down the river to preserve his own power base, or was he put under pressure by a government to ignore an SOS in the midst of the more pressing matter of fighting World War I? Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and King George V of Great Britain. Initially, the government that deposed the tsar was open to his leaving the country alive. However, their Bolshevik successors were less interested in facilitating safe passage.
Hair to the throne: King George V (1865-1936) and Prince Michael of Kent, his similarly bearded grandson. God save the genes: George VI's sister Princess Mary (1897-1965), and Princess Anne, her great niece. Spitting image: The nose and eyes of Edward VII (1841-1910) have been passed to Charles. George VI (York Cottage, Sandringham House, 14 December 1895 – 6 February 1952), was born Albert Frederick Arthur George Windsor. He was the King of the United Kingdom from 11 December 1936 until he died. He became king when his elder brother, Edward VIII abdicated (resigned) in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson. George VI was married to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon from 1923 until his death. He was succeeded as monarch by his elder daughter Elizabeth II.
God Save the King may date back to the seventeenth century. The tune first appeared in this form in 1744. It became popular in 1745, the second year of the Jacobite Uprising. After the Battle of Prestonpans, the bandleader of Theatre Royal, Drury Lane arranged the tune and played it at the end of the night - which other theatres picked up and which became customary. The tune became a rallying cry for the House of Hanover.
