Babe Rainbow the moniker of Canadian musician and record producer Cameron Reed. Reed first came to prominence following the release of two records as Babe Rainbow on the UK-based Warp Records, "Shaved EP" in 2010 and "Endless Path EP" in 2011. Mixing the genres of ambient, hip-hop, and experimental noise, Babe Rainbow was first described as creating "overcast, suffocating sonic landscapes" that evoke a sound "like living in a haunted house".

Great debut album! Fun modern psychedelic band. Words, words, words.

I think I have benefited greatly from knowing nothing about The Babe Rainbow prior to this album's release. Well, that's a lie, as it was a video for one of the songs on the album that convinced me to pre-order it. What I mean is, I never listened to their EP, or their singles on Spotify or Bandcamp. I think the albums great, it's fun and easy to listen to and doesn't try to be anything other than what it is; a relaxed album of 60's inspired (sometimes) beach songs. Since its release it has proved divisive, so it looks like this one is destined to exist within love it, or hate it territory, which I find interesting. I really don't know how an album that is so inoffensive can inspire such strong feelings among detractors, although I think if the album had been released on another label people wouldn't be as eager to complain about it, as I think The Babe Rainbow have suffered simply because they aren't King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. It's a good album in my opinion, and I've enjoyed listening to it, but it's probably not going to be for everyone!

Seldom have I been so looking froward to an album before, and I must say, that I did consider purchasing the limited edition on green vinyl, but it was sold out before I could get a copy … which pretty much saved me sixty hard earned dollars.I’ve been delightfully swimming with The Babe Rainbow for some time now, even managing to score digital copies of “Ash May & Dr. Lowewisdowm,” “Love Forever,” “Peace Bottom Boogy” which is on the album, “Planet Junior,” “Secret Enchanted Broccoli” and “Strawberry Cult Reincarnation.” And of course I figured that there’d be some material on the album that I wouldn’t be thrilled with, so adding these songs to the new material would make for a remarkable sunbaked hazy bit of breezy intoxication. And this brings me back to my first paragraph, pleased that I didn’t manage to get a copy of the vinyl, because this release is N-O-T at all what I’d expected. Yes, nearly all of the songs start out with that wasted sunshine psychedelic pop attitude, then in the middle they seemed to get confused, or have gone sideways, dropping in goofy vocal and musical effects that brought back images of Sopwith Camel for me, even the more silly forgettable material by the Monkees that just makes this album unlistenable for more than one spin … causing me to wonder where these hitchhiking surfer dudes have gone wrong, what they were smoking, or who talked them into this, and why they though it was cheeky and would be what their listeners wanted. The keepers are "Peace Bottom Boogy" which I knew prior to the album's release, and how I imagined the album would flow, along with "Cosmic Now."Of course it’s available to listen to on BandCamp, and downloadable there as well, so drift on over, see if it’s for you, and please, listen to each track all the way through before you decide to make your purchase. Me [?], I’m going to stick with the seventeen minutes of flat out blissful psychedelic pop that I have tucked away, and live with that.*** Yep … this limited edition on green vinyl is going to sell for big dollars, don’t be tempted, it’s not good, you’ll be stuck with it after paying the flippers their outrageous prices, because very quickly, it will not be desirable.*** The Fun Facts: The band’s name, Babe Rainbow, is a reference to the song “Babe Rainbow” by Melanie, from the album The Four Sides Of Melanie which was released in 1972.Review by Jenell Kesler

would be great if King Gizz would repress their first four albums!
