Nilsson Sings Newman is the fifth studio album by American singer Harry Nilsson, released in February 1970 on RCA Victor. It features songs written by Randy Newman. Recorded over six weeks in late 1969, the album showcases Nilsson's voice multi-tracked in layers of tone and harmony. Its arrangements are otherwise spare, with most of the instrumentation provided by Newman on piano.
Nilsson followed up 1971's Nilsson Schmilsson, his only Top 10 album, with a sequel of sorts. But under pressure from his record company to use the same template, Nilsson rebelled and turned in a more diverse collection instead. The gutsy rocker "You're Breakin' My Heart" is best known for its kiss-off chorus - "You're breakin' my heart, you're tearin' it apart, So f-- you" - which couldn't have made execs happy. 5. 'Many Rivers to Cross'. From: 'Pussy Cats' (1974).
This Nilsson discography is ranked from best to worst, so the top Nilsson albums can be found at the top of the list. To make it easy for you, we haven't included Nilsson singles, EPs, or compilations, so everything you see here should only be studio albums.
So, Nilsson was an Icarus. He teetered over the edge both musically and physically, indulging passions for melody and liquor as if both were going out of style. When he and Lennon hooked up in the early 70s, during Lennon's famed "lost weekend," it was like an excuse for both men to give in to every addiction, bad idea (and even a few good ones), and rock'n'roll clichŽ they'd managed to avoid before. The best news is that his voice is back to its old, silky smooth self (though he'd completely ruin it the following year recording Pussy Cats with Lennon). The bad news, if you don't happen to love extra golden oldie American popular song, is that the arrangements and performances are ddle, by-the-fakebook croon to make Andy Williams beat the band.
