Bernstein's recording of Copland's third symphony for Deutsche Grammophon is justly celebrated. His recording of the "other two great American thirds" for the same company should receive similar accolade. Counting these two works as similar in stature to Copland's may be controversial, but Bernstein certainly makes the best possible case for doing just that. Bernstein made a series of recordings of American mid-century 3rd symphonies, including the Aaron Copland effort, for DG in the 1980s and here he turns to two composers, both of whom were leading lights of American music in their heyday and who retain some of their reputation. The highlight for me was the Roy Harris 3rd (1939), a composition which holds up well, marked by a unison melody opening the work and a shimmering middle section which for me is the most memorable passage.
