When you start this album, you will be met by 'The Prophecy', some kind of intro, but it already expresses many emotions of the album and it lets listeners know what is waiting for them. Here is used the last riff from last track, 'A Tale Of Creation', so it seems that this album starts with this riff and ends with it, so in other words, this is a circle album. Then comes the powerful song 'Dark Reflections'. It isn't remarkable by melodiousness, but the vocal parts are epic and 'doom sounding'.

Candlemass Tales of Creation "Under the Oak" is a re-recording of a song that originally appeared on "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" (and also the "Tales of Creation" demo -see bonus reissue disc). Leif Edling originally wanted another Thomas Cole painting for the cover, but his bandmates "talked him out of it". A modified Gustave Doré work called 'The Creation of Light' was used instead. Tales of Creation is the fourth album by Swedish doom metal band Candlemass released in 1989 and reissued in 2001 with a bonus CD. Some of the material from this album ( Dark Reflections, Under the Oak, Into the Unfathomed Tower, Somewhere in Nowhere and A Tale of Creation ) were originally recorded in 1985 by one of the earliest incarnations of Candlemass. Under the Oak is actually a remake of a song from their 1986 debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. The cover art is a modified Gustave Doré’s work The Creation of Light.

Tales of Creation may not contain as many classics as some of Candlemass' previous efforts, but the band has never sounded better, and the exceptional production job fully highlights the operatic vocals of Messiah Marcolin without sacrificing any of the band's low-end guitar crunch. Unfortunately, the group wastes precious space on short spoken-word interludes, which, although they are meant to tie everything together, actually detract from the album's continuity  . While definitely not a first choice for new fans, this album will certainly satisfy serious doomsters.

Tales of Creation was Candlemass' fourth album and was originally released in 1989. The album was produced by Mats Lindfors and Candlemass and was recorded at Stockholm Recording studios. This release sees Messiah Marcolin (handling vocal duties for the final time on a Candlemass album), alongside composer and long-standing member Leif Edling, creating a stunning soundscape of epic atmosphere and melodic passages - a continued progression from these undisputed pioneers of the scene.

Tales of Creation might have to be the best this band has to offer by far, if not Epicus of course. This album differs slightly from Nightfall and Ancient Dreams, and even more so than their debut. Their slow and drone formula for Epicus has been essential obliterated, and traded up for a more fast-paced feel. At the start of the album you can see how Candlemass has already taken their first steps into this faster-paced recording. Aside from the gloomy intro, The Prophecy will explode in your face and echoed speech will be heard in the background before picking up the pace yet again. Not more than two minutes into the album and Candlemass have already managed to swoon the listener, and this is before we get a good look at Messiah Marcolin vocals.
