Gerry Mulligan meets a symphony orchestra on this unusual CD. The Houston Symphony (under the direction of Erich Kunzel) performs the seven sections of "The Sax Chronicles" (compositions of Harry Freedman based on Mulligan themes written in the style of a variety of classical composers), two shorter pieces by the classic jazzman ("Song for Strayhorn" and "K-4 Pacific") and a classical work written by Jeru: "Entente for Baritone Sax and Orchestra.

The liner notes state that Mr. Mulligan completed his first composition for symphony orchestra and solo baritone saxophone in 1984 entitled 'Entente for Baritone Saxophone and Orchestra'. In February, 1985 the 'Entente' was performed in New York by the American Composer's Orchestra under the direction of Dennis Russell Davis at Alice Tully Hall. In October, 1984, Gerry Mulligan opened his European tour at the Royal Festival Hall in London with the London Symphony Orchestra, where he performed the 'Entente and the Sax Chronicles'.

When Gerry Mulligan was 14, his family moved to Detroit and then to Reading, Pennsylvania. While in Reading, Mulligan began studying clarinet with dance-band musician Sammy Correnti, who also encouraged Mulligan's interest in arranging. In September 1951, Mulligan recorded the first album under his own name, Mulligan Plays Mulligan. By this point, he had mastered a melodic and linear playing style, inspired by Lester Young, that he would retain for the rest of his career. Mulligan's orchestral appearances at the time also included the Houston Symphony, Stockholm Philharmonic and New York Philharmonic. 1988 saw the premier of Mulligan's Octet for Sea Cliff, a chamber work commissioned by the Sea Cliff Chamber Players. 1987: Symphonic (Saxophone) Dreams (Par). 1990: Lonesome Boulevard (A&M). 1992: Re–Birth of the Cool.

Gerry Mulligan and his baritone sax were a part of the jazz world for several decades, including his work with trumpeter Chet Baker in the 1950s, his development of a unit that did not include a piano, and his work in the motion picture industry. This program features his work with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Erich Kunzel. More from Jim Wilson.
