The Spoils is a debut full-length studio album by Nika Roza Danilova, better known as Zola Jesus, released in July 2010 on Sacred Bones Records. To the LP version's original 10 tracks the CD (15 tracks) adds five songs: two from "Soeur Sewer" and three from the "Poor Sons" 7-inch singles. The album, according to the sleeve note was "recorded in the womb of a Wisconsin winter, 2008/2009". Nika Rosa made it in her apartment and lo-fi standard of the sound had been criticized even by her parents.

As charmin as the tape hiss is on this lo fi gem, that voice don't lie; this gal's got some range! Like the aforementiond TV Ghost, Zola Jesus traverses across some gothic terrain, but there's also tinges of Vega/Rev action, Cab Volt twiddle & an almost ESP like understandin've Amy Camus alter ego. Whatever it is, it works. So call it Crimson Wave if you's must, just don't lame up in the process or I will PERSONALLY see to it that Zola Jesus cuts off your balls & feeds them to you for supper. The Woodbe reach can be ruthless, beware

Poor Sons by Zola Jesus, released 21 June 2009. Zola Jesus signed to Sacred Bones in 2008. In the seven years that followed, we released eight albums together (three LPs, two EPs, two 7 s, a CD-R, and even a DVD). We discovered her via Myspace, which was the common A&R vehicle of the early- to mid-Aughts. Nika is the sole member of Zola Jesus.
Zola Jesus is the project of Nika Roza Danilova, who crafts dark yet uplifting music dominated by her operatic vocals and keyboards. As her work moved from the lo-fi bedroom productions of early works like 2009's The Spoils. Zola Jesus, aka Nika Roza Danilova, might look the part, but this taster from her forthcoming EP, Valusia, sounds jovial in comparison to the slow-burn doom-pop of the astonishing Stridulum II album. Poor Animal was produced by Chris Coady, who has previously worked with Yeah Yeah Yeahs and TV On the Radio, and is almost a full-on dance number, all pulsating beats and dramatic strings. Zola Jesus is still a goth, she's just wearing her dancing shoes under something floaty and made of black lace
