First presented at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in 1893, this all-American Waldorf salad recipe includes chopped apples, celery, grapes, and toasted walnuts in a mayonnaise dressing. It’s especially popular around the holidays, gracing many a Thanksgiving and holiday spread. According to the American Century Cookbook, the first Waldorf Salad was created in New York City in 1893, by Oscar Tschirky, the maître d’hôtel of the Waldorf Astoria

1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon white sugar, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1/8 teaspoon salt, 3 apples - peeled, cored, and chopped, 1 cup thinly sliced celery, 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, 1/2 cup raisins (optional). In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sugar, lemon juice, and salt. Stir in the apples, celery, walnuts, and raisins. Chill until ready to serve.

The Waldorf salad was first created at the Waldorf Hotel in New York city. It’s simple and light so it goes well with a heavier main course. It features raw apples, celery and walnuts mixed with mayonnaise. The crunch and sweetness of the walnuts and apples really bring an interesting texture. The mayonnaise is often substituted for yogurt and fresh grapes as well as cooked chicken or turkey is often added.

1 cup diced celery, 1 cup diced cored, peeled apples, 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts, 1/2 cup seedless red grapes, halved, optional, 1/2 to 3/4 cup mayonnaise. Preparation Combine celery, apples, walnuts, and grapes in a medium bowl. Serve at room temperature or chilled. Reprinted with permission from Joy of cooking by Irma S. The Waldorf School’s computer-free environment has become a draw for parents at high-tech companies like Google. The Waldorf School in Los Altos, Calif. Here, Bryn Perry reads on a desktop. So do employees of Silicon Valley giants like Google, Apple, Yahoo and Hewlett-Packard. But the school’s chief teaching tools are anything but high-tech: pens and paper, knitting needles and, occasionally, mud. Not a computer to be found. No screens at all. They are not allowed in the classroom, and the school even frowns on their use at home.
