Farewell Blues Lyrics. Pete Fountain Lyrics provided by SongLyrics.
Mardi Gras, New Orleans style, owes as much to Afro-Caribbean customs and the Latin American carnival tradition as it does to the French colonists who established it in their new city. The Mardi Gras celebrations actually last for several weeks. About a month before the main carnival, a season of elaborate balls and parties begins: the official Mardi Gras program is published, and shops start selling the very sweet and colorful "King Cake", a delicacy that can only be found during this holiday season.

Fountain brought the traditional jazz of his native New Orleans to a national audience through frequent appearances on the Lawrence Welk and Johnny Carson television shows. His health problems caused Mr. Fountain to miss Mardi Gras in 2006; it was the first time in 46 years that his whimsically named Half-Fast Walking Club participated in the festivities without him. Shortly afterward, he suffered a heart attack and underwent quadruple bypass surgery. But he was well enough to perform at the Jazz and Heritage Festival that May (his cardiologist was in attendance in case of an emergency), and despite continuing health problems, he remained a mainstay of that festival, and of the city itself, until 2013.

As well as his own Mardi Gras Strutters, there is also the Basin Street Six and Santo and his Dixieland Jazz Band represented here. It does not make a great deal of difference however, as the bands sound remarkably similar! The recordings were made between 1950 and 1963 and were selected by Pete Fountain to represent his work over that period. Pete hails from New Orleans and is steeped in jazz tradition, he has an excellent clarinet technique and a nice warm sound on the instrument. The music selected is mostly from the classic dixieland library and the one or two exceptions are made to sound like they belong anyway! For lovers of Traditional Jazz, this album is a must and to someone like myself with perhaps a slightly more modern jazz perspective, an album that was fun to listen to, which sounded like the musicians were enjoying it too!
