The Ghosts of Highway 20 is the twelfth studio album by American country music singer Lucinda Williams. The album was released on February 5, 2016, by Highway 20 Records. All songs are written or co-written by Williams, except "Factory", written by Bruce Springsteen. Bitter Memory" was performed by Connie Britton as her character Rayna Jaymes on the TV series Nashville.
Produced by Lucinda Williams, Greg Leisz & Tom Overby. Album The Ghosts of Highway 20. Ghosts of Highway 20 Lyrics. I know this road like the back of my hand Same with the stations on the FM band Farms and truck stops, firework stands I know this road like the back of my hand. Southern secrets still buried deep Brooding and restless 'neath the cracked concrete If you were from here you would defend me to the death Along with the ghosts of highway twenty.
The Ghosts of Highway 20 is filled with characters who either travel along the highway or live near its off-ramps, using I-20 as a jumping-off point for an album that focuses on lovers, losers, leavers and landscapes. Williams beefs up the album’s 12 original songs with two covers, too, including a version of Bruce Springsteen’s Factory. There’s also an updated take on a forgotten Woody Guthrie song, House of Earth, featuring lyrics by the folk music icon and music by Williams herself. Lucinda Williams Talks Renewed 'Spirit' on Double Album.
Lucinda Williams' 12th studio album is named after a stretch of Interstate 20 that runs in part from Texas to South Carolina. The highway hits the northern part of Williams' home state of Louisiana, as well as cities she has resided in (Atlanta, and Macon), has family ties to (Shreveport, Monroe) or has previously written about (Jackson, Vicksburg). Williams spent many of her formative years growing up in the towns that line up the long highway stretch, and the road is a common thread woven throughout. Williams explained why she named the album after the highway. It has played a big part of my life, from when I started school in Macon, Georgia," she told UK newspaper The Sun. My brother was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, my sister was born in Jackson, Mississippi and my mother was buried in, Louisiana. I have been going up and down is now Interstate 20 for my entire life," Williams continued.
Ghosts of Highway 20 was inspired by a trip several years ago to Macon, Georgia, where Williams attended grade school in the early 1960s. Lucinda Williams has been connecting things in her songs since 1979, the year she released her debut album on Folkways Records-a set of blues covers called Ramblin’. The next year, she followed up with the all-original Happy Woman Blues, also on Folkways. That one included the first of many songs in which Williams would make reference to towns that were intimately familiar to her.
Ghosts Of Highway 20, Lucinda Williams’ new album, is a two-disc set. What’s more, it’s the second double album she’s released within eighteen months – that’s thirty-four new recordings in total, a productive streak by any standards. The first thing that strikes me about Ghosts Of Highway 20 is not actually the songs, but the sound. It’s a slow, almost psychedelic groove, given form by chiming electric guitars, laying a bed for Lucinda’s languid vocals. And on The Ghosts Of Highway 20 it may be the artist’s journey that is more important than the destination. Songs played: Death Came, Louisiana Story, Place In My Heart, Can’t Close the Door on Love, If My Love Could Kill, Doors of Heaven, If There’s A Heaven.
