Barry made his first big mark with an equally wonderful backdrop to Bond's earlier From Russia With Love and Goldfinger adventures. It had been Barry's intent to give Shirley Bassey - who'd scored big with "Goldfinger" - a second go-around with a Bond movie song, but the producers' decision to change the song resulted in Tom Jones getting the title song, devised by Barry at the last moment. He lends the "Thunderball" vocal theme a well-gauged mix of pelvic thrust and serious drama.
Goldfinger" was composed by John Barry, with lyrics by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, and is widely acknowledged as a classic of its genre. Famously, co-producer Harry Saltzman hated the song and only agreed to use it when persuaded by Albert Broccoli. Originally, Newley recorded a version of the theme song, but it was later re-recorded with Bassey's voice for the film and soundtrack album. The US soundtrack album did not have these tracks but featured a Barry guitar cover version of the main theme that did not appear in the film. Barry also used the theme on his 1965 John Barry Plays Goldfinger album that featured Robert Brownjohn artwork.

Goldfinger (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). You Only Live Twice (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). Though perhaps overshadowed by the pop success of Harry Nilsson's rendition of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'" (and overwhelmed on the album by songs from . Thomas, Elephant's Memory, and even early Warren Zevon), John Barry's elegant title track and handful of cues here still rate as some of his best.
John Barry - Goldfinger. Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). Barry genuinely builds suspense, tension, and mystery within his sounds-and, along with McCartney's "Live and Let Die," the title song remains the best (and definitely the most haunting) of all the Bond-based title tunes
