Pieces of a Man is the first studio album by American vocalist Gil Scott-Heron. It was recorded in April 1971 at RCA Studios in New York City and released later that year by Flying Dutchman Records. The album followed Heron's debut live album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox (1970) and departed from that album's spoken word performance, instead featuring compositions in a more conventional popular song structure.

Jagged jigsaw pieces Tossed about the room I saw my grandma sweeping With her old straw broom But she didn't know what she was doing She could hardly understand That she was really sweeping up Pieces of a man. I saw my daddy meet the mailman And I heard the mailman say "Now don't you take this letter to heart now, Jimmy Cause they've laid off nine others today" But he didn't know what he was saying He could hardly understand That he was only talking to Pieces of a man. I saw the thund.

I Think I'll Call It Morning. Pieces Of A Man. 4:52. 10. –Gil Scott-Heron. The Needle's Eye. 4:48. Gil Scott-Heron's second album was a landmark in black music. This CD release includes bonus tracks from a session by his earlier group Black & Blues.

Let's get one thing straight - Pieces of a Man doesn't even start until the third track. Don't get suckered in by the two before it. The much-referenced "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" is a great song, worthy of its plaudits as a furious and funky call to arms and an important early touchstone for the emerging hip-hop subculture in America, both in its anti-establishment stance and its dizzying patchwork of cultural references. But then the album proper kicks in - and it's very, very good. The last 8 songs on here all fall in line with the soul of the very early '70s - think a Curtis that replaces an orchestra with a chamber band, or a What's Going On that replaces head-in-the-clouds wistfulness with earthy indignation, or a There's A Riot Goin' On without the drugs.

Gil Scott-Heron’s Pieces Of A Man is one of the most important albums in the history of black American music. Although it didn’t set the charts alight, it stands as a masterpiece alongside contemporary works such as Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, Curtis Mayfield’s debut LP, Funkadelic's Maggot Brain and Isaac Hayes’ Shaft. All were brilliant in their way, but lyrically Scott-Heron was on a different level from almost every other writer. Our vinyl reissue of the album comes in a gatefold sleeve, a facsimile of the original 1971 release. The CD version features three bonus titles from Black & Blues, Scott-Heron’s college group, recorded at a short session and promptly forgotten. Toast To The People’ debuted on our Liberation Music comp in 2013. The other two tracks make their first appearance here.

On Kanye West’s 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, there is an often-overlooked track entitled Who Will Survive America? The song features Gil Scott-Heron taking a dystopian look at how the world is coming to the realization that America is a bastard hosed down daily with a gagging perfume.
