The music was recorded inside Toronto's Church of the Holy Trinity on November 27, 1987, with the band circled around a single microphone. Cowboy Junkies photographed on June 22, 1989. The e session in a Canadian church produced the best cover of Lou Reed’s Sweet Jane and so much more. It's no secret: Lou Reed, the inimitable Velvet Underground frontman and solo rock legend, was a bit of a cranky dude. This album always felt more of the American south and southwest. Perhaps that could be chalked up to Natural Born Killers, the twisted Oliver Stone film starring Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis as star-crossed victims/serial killers out for revenge. But their love is the sort that appeals to us all, just a little; we all want a part of what they have. There is literally no other song to follow those words than the Cowboy Junkies' "Sweet Jane," as Timmins' whispers of those famous lyrics just crack the soul. Because we all know that if you play the game of love, your heart will be broken.

The band has an impressive catalog of music where they have added new dimensions to their sound over the years while retaining their identity as well as a tremendous amount of class to their work. However, the Trinity Session is their masterpiece and this has not aged one minute since its 1988 release which is a testament in itself. The album is half covers and half originals but the Junkies don't play it straight on the covers and the originals are all fantastic
