Hindemith wrote most of his string quartets when he was young, then returned to the form twenty years later. A skillful synthesis of Brahms and Reger with some newer ideas about harmony, the First String Quartet is a student work which gained Hindemith notice and some prize money, then languished in a notebook until 1966. A few years later Hindemith wrote the Second String Quartet while in the trenches during World War I. Composing such a complex and engaging work while in extremis (Hindemith narrowly escaped being killed by a grenade at one point) is intriguing to contemplate.

Germany claims some of the most renowned composers, singers, producers and performers of the world. Germany is the largest music market in Europe, and third largest in the world. German Classical is one of the most performed in the world; German composers include some of the most accomplished and popular in history, among them Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Händel, Ludwig van Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner.

Paul Hindemith (/ˈhɪndəmɪt/; 16 November 1895 – 28 December 1963) was a prolific German composer, violist, violinist, teacher and conductor. In the 1920s, he became a major advocate of the Neue Sachlichkeit (new objectivity) style of music. Notable compositions include his song cycle Das Marienleben (1923), Der Schwanendreher for viola and orchestra (1935), and opera Mathis der Maler (1938)

Hindemith wrote seven string quartets; Schott published all except for O. (String Quartet N. ). The traditional numbering, with O. 0 (String Quartet No. 2) as the first quartet, is Schott's; throughout his lifetime and with a high degree of consistency, Hindemith numbered the O. quartet as his first, and the remaining six quartets as No. -7. The O. 2 quartet is even identified as N. on the program of its premiere performance. Since the early 1990s, all Schott printings of the quartets make use of Hindemith's own numbering.

Album · 2008 · 8 Songs. String Quartet No. 13 In A Minor, Op. 29, D. 804: "Rosamunde": IV. Allegro Moderato.

That said, the performances are largely praiseworthy, and the digital sound is still extraordinary.
