because both bad and good (as well as other adjectives) obviously require as, not than, in comparisons. The juxtaposition of as and than without intervening punctuation is not logically defensible. So the LRB line could be recast thus: just as well as us, if not better

This removes all ambiguity and stops your wording from appearing pretentious. Speech operates much more flexibly, of course. Here’s the reason for the confusion -- and the pointless shouting match:- The word than is both a conjunction and a preposition.

The bass is strong, pleasant, but with just a hint of flab. The mids are okay and the highs are definitely rolled of. .Not so much that all detail is gone, but definitely noticeable when compared to other Sennheiser headphones on the same display. A step in the right direction for sure. Better than the equally priced Sony MDR V6? No. But much more stylish!

It's just better than expected, no more and no less, and certainly not something that puts them in line for a knighthood or a Nobel prize! By continuous scale, I mean that the target is set (say) as a percentage rather than just Grade A, Grade B, Grade C etc. Obviously the fewer grades there are, the more people will fall within their target grade, but it still should not be considered superhuman for someone to achieve a better than expected grade  .
